6 Tips on how to style your new dining room

Dear New Homeowner, are you building a new house or just bought a new property? It’s equally as stressful as it is exciting. You have so many things to think about now, but don’t worry, I got you covered.

When it comes to decorating your dining room, there are no hard and fast rules. But there are a few things that can help you create a space that’s both stylish and functional:

  1. Start by thinking about the purpose of the room. Do you want it to be a formal space for hosting dinner parties or a more casual area where the family can gather around the table?

At this point, you can also pick a theme. When decorating your dining room, it’s important to choose a theme that will be consistent with the kitchen. This will help to create a cohesive look for your home. There are many different themes that you can choose from, but some of the most popular options include modern, traditional, and rustic. If you choose a modern theme, you’ll want to stick with sleek and simple furniture and decorations, for example, see this table - HERE.  A traditional theme will feature more ornate pieces, see this table - HERE  while a rustic theme will incorporate natural materials like wood and metal - HERE. No matter which theme you choose, make sure that the colours and styles are consistent with the kitchen. This will help to create a unified look for your home and will make it feel more like one cohesive unit.

  2. Once you’ve decided on the overall vibe, start thinking about the furniture. A large dining table is a must-have for any formal dining room, while a smaller table is perfect for a more casual space. If you don’t have enough space for a table, consider using a kitchen island or peninsula instead. Here are a few tips on what shape could be best for your space. Rectangular and square dining tables are the most popular shape, and they are ideal for large gatherings. They can accommodate up to 12 people comfortably, and they are perfect for both formal and casual occasions. A round dining table provides better use of space in a smaller area so that there is less bumping or crowding when trying to sit down. Round tables also have smaller footprints than rectangular tables of the same size and are well-designed to squeeze more people around the table for additional seating.

  3. When decorating a dining room, it’s important to create a focal point. This could be a beautiful chandelier, a large painting or a mirror, for example - SEE THIS ONE or a striking piece of furniture. By focusing attention on one area, you’ll make the space feel more cohesive and pulled together. And, it will be easier to decorate the surrounding areas, since they will be secondary to the focal point. If you’re having trouble deciding on a focal point, take a look at your dining table. Is it the most eye-catching piece in the room? If not, consider using the table as the focal point. Place a beautiful chandelier or centrepiece above it or hang a large mirror behind it. This will help to draw attention to the table and make it the focal point of the room.

  4. Use soft textures. Textures are important to use in the dining room because they add visual interest and can help to create a specific mood or feeling. For example, a soft, plush rug can add a touch of luxury to a formal dining room, while a woven placemat can add a touch of rusticity to a country-style dining room. Wallpaper with a textured pattern can add depth to a small dining room, while a painted mural can make a large dining room feel more intimate. Choosing the right textures can help to set the tone for your dining room and make it more visually appealing.

  5. Add plants. Plants can help to add life and colour to the room. There are many reasons why plants are a great choice for a dining room. For starters, they can help to create a natural and relaxing atmosphere. They can also improve air quality, which is especially important if you spend a lot of time in your dining room. Plants can also be used to add colour and texture to a room, regardless of whether they are real or artificial. They can help to brighten up a space and make it feel more inviting. See my favourite large plant here - HERE.

  6. Use accessories. Accessories can help to personalize the space and add interest. Accessories can help to create a functional space that is both comfortable and stylish. Choose pieces that are both pretty and practical. If you have a wooden dining table, then I recommend metal or glass accessories. If you have a glass dining table, then you will need wooden accessories. Adding a few finishing touches will help to complete the look of your dining room and make it feel like a real living space.

We hope these tips help you create a dining area that you love.
